The crackdown on irregular migration, which began last year, has so far led to the deportation of over 5,000 expatriates from the Maldives. Authorities are also implementing ‘Operation Kurangi’, a programme aimed at collecting biometric data from all expatriates in the country. The Home Ministry has recorded biometric data from over 25,000 individuals and expects to complete the process by April next year.
