Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef announced that 36 islands, which missed out on decorative lights during last year’s Eid celebrations, will receive them this year at an estimated cost of MVR 28 million.

The decorative lights are part of the festivities for Eid and continue a tradition initiated when President Dr Mohamed Muizzu was the Mayor of Male’ City. In previous years, Male’, Hulhumale’, and Vilimale’ were among the areas adorned with these lights.

At a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister Shareef explained that this year, the government will extend the lighting initiative to 36 additional islands, with a total projected expenditure of MVR 28 million. He acknowledged that while the cost might seem significant, the lights will be a long-term investment and will be reused for future events.

The lights will display Islamic slogans and feature the recitation of Takbeer, in line with President Muizzu’s commitment to preserving and promoting the Islamic legacy.

Minister Shareef also noted that the lights will not only be used for Eid but will be available for other special occasions such as Independence Day and National Day.

This initiative aims to bring joy to the people, celebrating the beauty of the occasion and fostering a sense of pride and unity during Eid festivities.
