The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has announced that the government plans to construct mosques in six islands this year, with designs that reflect the Maldives’ history, culture, and environment.

The mosques will be built on the islands of Haa Alifu Baarah, Alifu Alifu Rasdhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Fenfushi, Faafu Feeali, Thaa Veymandoo, and Gaafu Dhaalu Madaveli, according to the Ministry. The designs, created by Ryan Pvt Ltd, will incorporate environmentally appropriate features for the Maldives. Construction will begin after Ramadan and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The Ministry also shared the design of a mosque to be built on one of the islands, which will have a capacity to accommodate 700 people. Each of the new mosques will be equipped with modern amenities, such as solar panels, air conditioning, and navilon. Additionally, classrooms for Qur’an education will be included in the design. The capacity of the mosques will range from 300 to 700 people, depending on the island.

Minister Shaheem stated that the cost of constructing a mosque with a capacity for 300 people would be approximately MVR 6 million. He suggested that private associations or wealthy individuals interested in funding the construction could expect full cooperation and assistance from the Ministry.

Currently, there are 35 mosque construction projects underway, and 12 mosques are being funded through private donations. Minister Shaheem also noted that there are 42 islands in need of mosques.
