President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assured the residents of Dhaalu Atoll Kudahuvadhoo yesterday that a commercial port will be developed and completed before his term ends.
Muizzu is on a three-day trip to Dhaalu Atoll, where he will meet with the residents, councils, and institution heads of all the inhabited islands. He will return to Male’ tomorrow.
During his visit to Kudahuvadhoo, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu oversaw the signing of an agreement between the government and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to develop a commercial port on the island. Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed signed on behalf of the government, while MPL CEO Mohamed Rishwan represented the company.

“This is a very viable project when you take this region into consideration. It is a very, very feasible project. Therefore, with the signing of this agreement, [we] will do everything possible, the assurance I give you, is this commercial harbour will be completed to the full and its maximum operational capacity by the end of this term,” he said in Dhivehi.
Addressing the residents of Kudahuvadhoo, President Muizzu reaffirmed the project’s significance as a regional initiative, assuring that, with the will of Allah, the port would be completed and fully operational within his term. He also highlighted additional economic initiatives planned for the island, including installing a USD ATM before the end of his term. Yesterday, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for a new Bank of Maldives (BML) branch to be developed on the island.
President Calls for Social Unity
During his address, President Muizzu urged social unity and criticised the spread of misinformation regarding government-led initiatives. He responded to criticism over the government’s initiative to distribute canned tuna cases, confirming that, as in the previous year, discounts would continue for water and electricity bills.
Council’s Concerns and WDC’s Appreciation
The President also met with the Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and institutional heads of Kudahuvadhoo, alongside his ministerial delegation. The Council appealed for continuity in the projects initiated during this visit and requested the establishment of an industrial area, a fish processing facility, and urgent solutions to erosion issues.

The WDC members expressed their gratitude for the administration’s efforts in promoting women’s development. Last week, President Muizzu approved amendments to the Decentralisation Act, enabling WDC members, who previously did not qualify, to receive the Ramadan Allowance starting this year.
