The foundation for an ice plant has been laid on the island of Bandidhoo in Dhaalu Atoll.

The ceremony took place last afternoon and was attended by the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam. The minister was visiting the island as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing tour of the atoll.

The ice plant in Bandidhoo will have a capacity of 30 tonnes.

A significant number of youth from the island are engaged in the fisheries sector, with Bandidhoo home to 21 fishing vessels primarily used for yellowfin tuna fishing. However, fishermen have long faced challenges due to the absence of an ice plant in the vicinity.
