Maldivian fishermen will receive Ramadan allowances, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced last night.

The decision, aimed at supporting the country’s fishing sector, was revealed during the President’s visit to Dhaalu Atoll, where he addressed residents of Dhaalu Meedhoo. He emphasised that providing Ramadan allowances to fishermen is a key priority for his administration, with preparations already underway to implement the initiative.

To ensure a smooth and efficient distribution process, a registry of fishermen has been compiled, allowing allowances to reach those eligible before the start of Ramadan. The President reassured the public that all necessary steps have been taken to facilitate a timely rollout of the scheme.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to provide financial assistance to key economic sectors, particularly the fishing industry, which plays a vital role in the Maldivian economy. The allowances are expected to ease financial burdens on fishermen during the fasting month.

This announcement follows the government’s successful implementation of Ramadan allowances for Women’s Development Committee (WDC) members. Legal amendments have already been ratified, with councils instructed to complete the transfers before the end of the week, fulfilling a key pledge of the administration.

As the government continues expanding financial support programmes, the Ramadan allowance for fishermen is seen as a reflection of President Muizzu’s commitment to strengthening the livelihoods of those at the core of the nation’s economy.
