President Dr Mohamed Muizzu declared today a public holiday due to the heavy downpour the Maldives has been experiencing over the past 24 hours.
The announcement was made via the President Office’s Spokesperson Heena Waleed. According to the President’s Office, this decision was made following the “torrential rain and flooding across the country, which have caused hardship for the public.”
Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) shared that in the past 24 hours, from 8:00 a.m yesterday to 8:00 a.m today, Kaafu atoll Dhiffushi experienced the heaviest rainfall in the Maldives, with a recorded amount of 296.1 mm. Hulhumale has the second highest rainfall recorded, at 185.2 mm of rainfall within that period.
The island with the lowest amount of rainfall is Seenu atoll Gan, with 22.3 mm of rainfall.
The MMS predicts widespread rainfall with the occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms over the country. They forecast winds may gust at 45 miles per hour during showers and the sea would become rough with the showers as well.
