The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure is preparing new plans to redevelop Rasfannu Beach and Sultan Park, with work set to commence after the fasting month of Ramadan, Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib has announced.

The announcement was made during a media briefing at the reopened Rasfannu Beach, which had undergone temporary renovations. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the site on Thursday to inspect the improvements. These interim renovations were carried out to ensure public access to the facilities during Ramadan.

Rasfannu Beach has suffered from years of neglect due to insufficient maintenance, resulting in significant damage to several facilities. Public complaints have highlighted broken joali (rope chairs), holhu-ashi (local gazebos with bench-like seating made from hollow wooden trunks), and huts, with tidal surges during severe weather conditions also contributing to beach erosion.

In late February, the area was temporarily closed for renovations aimed at making it accessible to the public during Ramadan. Minister Muththalib stated that the site has now reopened following essential repair work.

The project, completed in approximately a week, involved collaboration between government offices and state-owned companies. The temporary renovations included beach cleaning, nourishment, and repairs to hut roofs and seating arrangements.

Despite these efforts, the government is moving forward with a comprehensive redevelopment plan set to begin immediately after Ramadan. Minister Muththalib outlined plans to enhance Rasfannu Beach with improved facilities to make the area more practical and comfortable for visitors.

The redevelopment will address the lack of public restrooms at the beach, which has been a key concern. The minister also stated that entertainment options will be introduced, and the damaged fishing platform will be repaired to benefit local fishermen. Seating arrangements will be expanded with additional joali.
