Man Arrested for Smoking During Ramadan and Causing Damage in Custody

A man was arrested after attempting to smoke a cigarette on the street during Ramadan and was later taken into custody for damaging property at the police station.

Mohamed Sobah, 46, from Lilyge, GDh. Dhevvadhoo, was remanded in custody for 15 days by the Criminal Court on Friday.

According to the court order, Sobah was stopped by police while trying to light a cigarette in public during the fasting month. He was subsequently arrested and taken to Maafannu Police Station. While in the holding area, he removed the armrest of a chair, which then struck the outside floor of the holding room, causing damage.

The court also noted that Sobah has a criminal record, with 48 prior arrests and 25 detention orders issued against him.
