President Dr Mohamed Muizzu returned the recent amendments made to the Judicature Act to parliament yesterday for reconsideration.
The amendments proposed by the People’s National Congress (PNC) parliamentarian Abdul Sattar for the Holhudhoo constituency aimed to reduce the number of Supreme Court justices from seven to five. Two days later, the amendments to the Judicature Act were passed with 68 votes in favour and nine against.
Last week, Supreme Court Justice Husnu Al Suood resigned, causing the JSC to open applications to fill the vacancy. The JSC said that unless the president ratified the amendments, it would follow the laws currently in force, which call for a seven-judge Supreme Court bench.
