A one-megawatt (MW) generator has been transported to Addu City in an effort to address the ongoing power outage issues affecting the area.

Frequent power cuts have been a persistent problem in the southernmost city, prompting repeated protests from residents. The utility service in Addu is provided by Fenaka Corporation.

Although concerns about power disruptions have been raised since the current administration took office, a 1.8 MW generator was installed in the city on 21 February. However, despite this increase in capacity, Addu continued to experience power outages.

Previously, Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar stated that public protests were the only remaining option to voice concerns over the electricity supply. Shortly after his remarks, Fenaka Corporation’s Managing Director Mohamed Najah and Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Arif travelled to the city.

Upon their arrival, residents gathered near the airport and continued their protest, demanding answers regarding the delays in resolving the issue and seeking clarification on when the next generator would be installed.

Meanwhile, both Addu City Council members and lawmakers representing the city’s constituencies have expressed concerns, alleging negligence on the part of Fenaka Corporation.
