Over 100,000 Foreigners Registered Under Operation Kurangi

The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has announced that biometric data of 109,722 foreigners residing in the Maldives has been collected under Operation Kurangi. 

The initiative, launched on 2 May last year, aims to address the issue of illegal foreign residents in the country.

Conducted in collaboration with the Maldives Police Service and Maldives Immigration, the operation gathers biometric data, including fingerprints and facial recognition details, to ensure foreign workers comply with national laws and regulations. Of the total data collected, 67,214 records have been obtained from Male’ City.

The government has installed biometric collection systems in 186 local councils, with 80 islands having completed the data collection process. Information is also being gathered from foreigners working in resorts, with data collection finalised for 58 resorts and ongoing at 112 others.

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihsan stated that foreigners who have not submitted their biometric data by April will face deportation. He affirmed that efforts would be accelerated over the next forty days to complete the process.
