The government of the Maldives has launched electric motorcycles and established battery charging stations as part of its ongoing efforts to promote environmentally friendly policies.

Hussain Fahmy, Managing Director of STELCO, stated that the battery management system, sourced from the renowned Taiwanese brand Gogoro, is designed to be easily accessible to the public. The electric motorcycles and their batteries have already arrived in the Maldives, and charging stations are set to be established in various areas, including Male and Hulhumale.

Fahmy also highlighted that businesses will soon have the opportunity to import battery-compatible motorcycles. The introduction of these systems, alongside electric vehicle (EV) charging stations for cars, is expected to support the country’s green vision and assist in realising the aspirations of electric vehicle enthusiasts.

In addition, plans are underway to offer test rides of the electric motorcycles in order to raise awareness and encourage the public to embrace greener transportation options. The energy management system, along with the power supply for the EV charging stations, will be sourced from environmentally sustainable systems, contributing to the government’s target of generating 33 percent of its energy from renewable sources.

Fahmy expressed optimism, noting that the Maldivian public is eager to adopt environmentally friendly solutions that will reduce air pollution in Male and enhance public health.
