The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has awarded a contract to Sunny Land Investment for the construction of waste management centres on four islands.
The agreement was formalised at a ceremony held yesterday. Under the contract, waste management centres will be built in Himandhoo, Thoddoo, and Feridhoo in Alifu Alifu Atoll, as well as Kaashidhoo in Kaafu Atoll. Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim stated that the government aims to establish waste management systems on all inhabited islands. While ongoing efforts are being made to achieve this target, he confirmed that additional waste management centres would be developed in more islands in the coming days.
The Minister further highlighted that the Ministry would soon supply the necessary equipment and resources for waste management. He noted that the required equipment had already been procured and reiterated President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s objective to establish waste management centres on all islands by the end of the year. He urged island councils to provide their full support in implementing the project.
The Greater Malé Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project is being implemented by the Ministry with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank and other international donors. The initiative aims to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly waste and resource management system across Zone 3, which includes islands in Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, and Vaavu Atolls.
