The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has begun work to connect the water systems of Malé and Hulhumalé, according to the company’s Managing Director, Abdul Matheen Mohamed.

Speaking on state media, Matheen stated that a pipeline installed along the Sinamalé Bridge has the capacity to transport 20,000 tonnes of water per day. He confirmed that the pipeline has been cleaned and connected at both ends, with an initial capacity to transport 3,000 tonnes of water daily from Malé to Hulhumalé. This system is intended to ensure water supply security, allowing the transfer of water between the two locations in case of supply disruptions or maintenance requirements.

The installation of pump stations in both Malé and Hulhumalé is necessary before the full system can be utilised. Matheen stated that construction of these stations will be completed next month, with supporting infrastructure, including electricity, expected to be operational by July or August.

In his presidential address at the opening of parliament this year, President Mohamed Muizzu announced that the connection of the water systems between Malé and Hulhumalé would be completed within the year. He also stated that water production in Malé would increase by 25% in 2024.

MWSC has commenced work with Hitachi to expand water production capacity in Malé by an additional 10,000 tonnes.
