The government has awarded a contract for the construction of a new powerhouse, including surrounding walls and a customer service building, on Thulusdhoo in Kaafu Atoll.

The contract, valued at USD 772,727, has been awarded to Sunwill Private Limited, with a completion deadline set for 175 days. The agreement was signed by Hussain Fahmy, Managing Director of The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), and Abdulla Rafiu, Managing Director of Sunwill Private Limited.

During the signing ceremony, Fahmy highlighted that Thulusdhoo was the first island outside of Malé to receive STELCO services. He noted that while the current powerhouse on the island is of good quality, it is situated in a residential area. To enhance public convenience, the new powerhouse will be relocated to a newly reclaimed area. This move aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s policy of constructing powerhouses away from urban centres. Fahmy expressed his appreciation for the President’s decision.

Ibrahim Naseem, Member of Parliament for Thulusdhoo Constituency, welcomed the project, noting that while the island’s electricity grid is generally in good condition, occasional issues arise during peak demand, particularly during festive periods like Eid. He expressed hope that these issues would be alleviated with the new powerhouse.

Aslam Moosa, President of Thulusdhoo Council, emphasised that the new powerhouse had been eagerly awaited by island residents. He also noted that with the anticipated growth in guesthouses, electricity consumption on Thulusdhoo is expected to double in the near future.
