The Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) will increase its water storage capacity in the Malé region by 10,000 tonnes starting next month, according to the company’s Managing Director, Abdul Matheen Mohamed.

The State-owned utility launched efforts last year to expand both its water production and storage capabilities. Matheen, speaking during a programme aired by PSM News, outlined the ongoing work to enhance water infrastructure in the capital region.

Current work involves connecting pumps and pipelines to a new 10,000-tonne storage facility in Hulhumalé. Matheen noted that this part of the project is progressing, with plant manufacturing already partially completed and some materials having arrived in Malé. The construction contract was awarded following an international bidding process.

In addition to increasing storage, MWSC is also developing a water connection system between Malé and Hulhumalé, capable of circulating 800 tonnes of water per hour. While the pipeline was previously integrated into the Sinamalé Bridge, the connection remained non-functional for the past five years. Efforts to complete the system resumed after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu took office in 2023.

MWSC has stated that the project is now close to completion and is expected to become fully operational by June. These developments are part of a broader government-led initiative to strengthen water services in the Greater Malé area.
