The contracts have been assigned to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and were signed at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Construction. State Minister Ibrahim Nazeem signed the agreements on behalf of the Ministry, while MTCC was represented by Managing Director Ahmed Saudy.
The Maavah project, valued at MVR 89.13 million, is to be completed within 540 days. The scope of work includes the placement of 166,400 cubic metres of coarse sand and 55,500 cubic metres of grain sand, as well as the deepening of a 7,500-cubic-metre swimming area. The project also involves the installation of a 524-metre rock revetment, a 2,024-metre geobag revetment, a 180-metre rock groyne, and a 260-metre geobag groyne.
The project is intended to address coastal erosion and flooding in Maavah, which has a population of 2,200.
The Hangaameedhoo project, valued at MVR 46.2 million, is scheduled for completion within 240 days. It includes the placement of 14,322.75 cubic metres of both coarse and grain sand, along with the construction of a 455-metre outer breakwater and a 440-metre rock groyne.
Erosion has been a long-standing concern in Hangaameedhoo, home to around 760 residents. The planned works are expected to mitigate these issues and restore the beach area.
