The resolution was passed at a general council meeting held yesterday, following a proposal submitted by the Cancer Society of Maldives.

During the meeting, Mayor Adam Azim announced that the council would completely cease the use of betel nut in all its functions, citing public health concerns as the primary reason behind the move.

The decision received strong backing from Deputy Mayor Mohamed Areesh and other council members. Several members highlighted the significant health risks associated with betel nut consumption and described the resolution as a positive step towards promoting public well-being.

As a result of this decision, betel nut products will no longer be included in any events or activities organised by Male’ City Council.
