Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has expressed concern over the low number of Maldivians pursuing education in engineering and called for an increase in scholarship opportunities in the field.

Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony of Kalaafaanu School on Thursday evening, the minister stressed the critical role engineers play in the development of the country. He noted that despite this importance, there is limited interest among youth in pursuing engineering as a career path.

Dr Muththalib said the issue has been raised on several occasions at cabinet meetings, and he had personally conveyed these concerns to the Minister of Higher Education, highlighting the lack of scholarships dedicated to engineering studies. He acknowledged the value of social sciences but underscored the need to prioritise scholarships in disciplines that directly support national development, particularly infrastructure.

In addition, the minister highlighted the importance of aligning loan facilities with projects that yield long-term benefits for the country.

He also commended the efforts of students from working-class backgrounds who manage to continue higher education in the Maldives while supporting their families and holding full-time jobs. He encouraged these students to take advantage of opportunities to study abroad full-time, where campus life offers valuable real-world experiences that contribute to professional growth.

The minister’s remarks come as President Dr Mohamed Muizzu recently declared 30 August as National Engineers’ Day, to be marked annually. The decision commemorates the inauguration of the Sinamalé Bridge, the largest infrastructure project completed in the Maldives. According to the presidential decree, all activities related to National Engineers’ Day will be organised and overseen by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure.
