The Maldives Police Service has commenced the sharing of information on convicted child sex offenders who have re-entered society, with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), as part of efforts to strengthen public safety and international cooperation.
In a statement issued on last Thursday, the Police highlighted that the Child and Family Protection Service has published the ‘Registry of Child Sex Offenders’ in accordance with Article 57 of the Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Abuse Offenders.

As part of this initiative, the Police have started issuing Interpol Green Notices for individuals listed in the registry who have completed their sentences and been released. A Green Notice serves as a warning to all Interpol member states, alerting them to an individual’s criminal background when that person is regarded as a potential threat to public safety.
Currently, Green Notices have been issued for 43 individuals — 25 Maldivians and 18 foreign nationals.
The Police stressed the importance of sharing such information with all relevant authorities to safeguard children. By extending this to an international level, other countries are enabled to monitor these individuals and take necessary precautions.
Authorities noted that this information may be used to restrict access to employment involving children. For instance, if a convicted individual attempts to migrate and seek work abroad, authorities in the destination country can be informed in advance and prevent them from working in child-related sectors.
