President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared Monday, 28 July 2025, a public holiday in honour of the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ Independence Day.
The President announced that the nation is preparing for a series of celebratory events marking six decades of independence. According to the President’s Office, these events will take place over two days, on Sunday, 27 July, and Monday, 28 July 2025.
President Muizzu stated that this milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey since gaining independence in 1965 and to honour the contributions of past and present generations.
Usually, only Independence Day and the day after are public holidays, to celebrate the occasion.
The government plans a range of official ceremonies, cultural showcases, and community events across the country as part of the celebrations. The extra public holiday is expected to allow broader public participation in commemorating this historic occasion.
