One Dead, One Missing After MNDF Landing Craft Capsizes Near Kaashidhoo

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has confirmed that one person has died and another remains missing following the capsizing of a landing craft near Kaashidhoo Island, en route to Lhaviyani Atoll.

The vessel, identified as LC 308, belonging to Sifainge Welfare Company (SIWEC), was carrying six people at the time of the incident. Among them were two MNDF officers, one Maldivian civilian, and three foreign nationals.

Warrant Officer 2 Ali Hamid tragically lost his life in the incident. He was transported to Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival, according to MNDF.

Divers from the MNDF Northern Area Command and Coast Guard First Squadron have recovered one of the two individuals who were initially reported missing. The search continues for the remaining missing person, identified as a migrant worker.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the capsizing.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has offered his condolences to Ali Hamid’s family and colleagues, expressing his solidarity with them during this difficult time.

Ali Hamid was a dedicated member of MNDF, who had served the country for 27 years.
