The government has decided to establish public works units in 15 additional islands, marking a major step in its initiative to ensure the presence of such units in every atoll of the Maldives.
The announcement was made by Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, through a post on social media platform X. The selected islands are HA. Dhidhdhoo, Sh. Funadhoo, N. Manadhoo, R. Maakurath, B. Eydhafushi, Lh. Naifaru, K. Thulusdhoo, AA. Rasdhoo, ADh. Mahibadhoo, V. Felidhoo, M. Muli, F. Nilandhoo, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, Th. Veymandoo, and GA. Vilingili.
According to the minister, the islands were chosen because they serve as the administrative centres of their respective atolls and are home to atoll councils.
Once operational, the new units will complete the government’s objective of establishing a public works unit in every atoll. The units are expected to play a key role in supporting infrastructure maintenance and development at the regional level.
