The new facility, located in the Orange Hiyaa Building where the Maldivian Blood Services is based, has been established to improve access to treatment, particularly for patients residing in the atolls. The centre is expected to reduce challenges previously faced in obtaining specialised medical attention and will allow for regular monitoring of patients’ conditions.
According to the Maldivian Blood Services, the centre will proactively reach out to patients in the atolls to identify those requiring additional assistance. Each registered thalassaemia patient will be contacted every three months to ensure their needs are addressed in a timely manner.
The initiative was made possible with the support of the Belarus Maldives Cultural Centre. Services at the facility will also be provided in collaboration with atoll hospitals to assist patients who require specialist consultations.
The Male’ City Group of Hospitals has also announced plans to introduce genetic testing, including DNA testing services, through the Maldivian Blood Services. Funding has been allocated for equipment and staff to establish the service, which is expected to provide more accurate diagnosis and testing for thalassaemia carriers, prenatal conditions, anaemia, and other rare blood disorders.
Currently, DNA testing is only offered by the Society for Health Education (SHE) at a cost of around USD 65, a fee that has raised concerns among patients and families.
