The survey, carried out during the final quarter of last year and the first quarter of this year, is a core responsibility of the MBS under the Statistics Act of the Maldives. It forms part of the bureau’s work in collecting and analysing labour and employment market data.
The launch ceremony was attended by Joni Simpson, the Country Director for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for Sri Lanka and the Maldives. She highlighted the importance of the human dimension behind the data being collected.
The survey is designed to offer insight into the working and unemployed populations, supporting the development of policies and strategies to address employment challenges. It covers a wide range of areas, including demographic information, details of the employed and income-earning population, data on those seeking work, education and migration patterns, time spent on household work, and the contribution of the volunteer workforce.
According to the MBS, the main objectives of the survey are to identify the economically active population, determine employment levels, and assess job creation trends. In addition, the findings will contribute to migration analysis, updated population projections, and monitoring progress towards the Maldives’ sustainable development goals.
The results of this survey are expected to play a key role in shaping future labour policies and economic planning in the country.
