Over 40 Islands Express Interest in Provincial Housing Project, Reveals Gov’t
The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has confirmed that 43 islands have expressed interest in participating in the government’s provincial housing project, which aims to support residents facing financial difficulties.
The initiative is part of a broader plan to introduce housing projects in 57 designated islands across the atolls. In early July, the Ministry requested island councils to gather information on residents who wished to build homes on their private land.
According to the Ministry, responses have been received from 43 islands, while 14 have yet to provide the requested details. For those that have submitted information, the projects are now in the pre-qualification evaluation stage, which involves arranging contractors and securing financial arrangements.
The government has described housing development as a priority area and has allocated a substantial budget for construction works this year. Contractors have shown strong interest in the projects, which will be awarded on a design-and-build basis to expedite implementation.
Housing developments have been categorised into four groups for bidding. Projects involving fewer than 50 housing units will be reserved for Maldivian contractors, while larger projects ranging from 51 to more than 300 units will be open to both local and international firms.
With over USD 64 million allocated to housing infrastructure in 2025, the government has underscored its commitment to expanding homeownership opportunities and addressing housing challenges across the country.
