President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government will propose amendments to laws removing certain allowances granted to former presidents and members of parliament.

In a post on X, President Muizzu said additional reforms are also being prepared. Among them are changes to ensure that pensions for retired public servants will be suspended if they re-enter public service and draw a salary.

The government is also working to revise regulations to equalise pension benefits, with plans to suspend pension payments for those who retire, then later resume employment in state positions.

The announcement comes amid growing public debate over government spending. Rising expenditure on former presidents, lawmakers, and sitting legislators has faced criticism on social media in recent weeks.
