The Maldives supported the New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution yesterday, during the second plenary session of the United Nations’ 80th session.
The resolution received the backing of 142 countries, while 10 voted against it and 12 abstained. It stems from the High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Resolution of the Palestinian Issue and the Execution of the Two-State Solution, held at the United Nations in July 2019 under the leadership of Saudi Arabia and France.
The declaration underscores the need for a fair and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue, advocating for the establishment of a democratic, self-sufficient Palestinian state. It highlights the importance of upholding international standards, security, and human rights, while affirming the right of nations to determine their own future.
The Maldives has consistently endorsed the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, based on pre-1967 borders.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu welcomed the General Assembly’s endorsement of the declaration. In a post on his official X account, he reaffirmed the Maldives’ support for collective international action, describing such efforts as essential to strengthen global consensus and ensure accountability for the rights of the Palestinian people.
