President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the launch of a nationwide operation, starting tomorrow, to identify and close unlicensed businesses, many of which are reportedly operated by expatriates in the Maldives.
Addressing residents of Faafu Atoll Nilandhoo, the President said the initiative will ensure all businesses operate in compliance with the law and will also target the repatriation of undocumented expatriates.
He noted that while previous administrations had taken limited measures, his Government has so far identified 178,982 undocumented expatriates and facilitated the repatriation of more than 8,000 individuals in recent months.
The President also identified drug abuse and gang-related crime as major challenges. He said these issues have persisted for years due to vested interests but assured that his Administration is committed to addressing them transparently and without judicial interference.
He referred to recent developments, including rulings in the 130 kg drug bust case and the enactment of the Prevention of Gang and Other Serious Offences Act. He added that amendments to the Drug Act are being drafted and will be submitted to Parliament in the upcoming session.
Reaffirming his Administration’s position, President Muizzu said matters of public safety, law, and order would be handled decisively, with the Government remaining committed to upholding the rule of law.
