The Civil Service Commission (CSC) of the Maldives announced the interim members who will run the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission today, following the ratification of the new law last week.

On Thursday, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu ratified the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act, which was passed by parliament two days earlier. Under the Act, the existing Maldives Media Council (MMC) will cease to function and merge with the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) to form the new regulatory body, which was established on the same day.

The Commission is set to have seven members: three appointed by parliament and four elected by the media, with two representing broadcasting outlets and two representing other media. Until permanent members are finalised, the Act requires the CSC to appoint an interim five-member committee composed of civil servants holding a Director General position or higher.

The CSC announced the following interim members:

  • Ali Zaki, Director General of the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation
  • Ahmed Mausoom, Director General of the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works
  • Aminath Naseer, Director General of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs
  • Aminath Shaahidhha, Director General of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade
  • Imad Mohamed, Chief Corporate Executive of the Maldives National Archives.

The interim committee will select its president and vice president through a secret vote. It is authorised to handle administrative tasks, accept probes submitted to the Commission, and decide on media registration requests. However, it cannot investigate or take action on cases submitted to the Commission or its predecessors, nor can it cancel media registrations granted previously.

The law requires permanent members of the Commission to be selected within 30 days of the interim committee’s formation. Members of the permanent Commission will serve five-year terms and may hold office for a maximum of two consecutive terms.

Under the Act, the Commission can impose fines ranging from MVR 50,000 to MVR 250,000 on broadcasters, and between MVR 5,000 and MVR 100,000 on news organisations.
