This year’s session carries particular significance for the Maldives as it marks the 60th anniversary of the country’s membership in the United Nations. Dr Khaleel is expected to deliver an address at the General Assembly debate. The Maldivian delegation will also host two side events during the session. One, organised in collaboration with Estonia, will focus on digital transformation for sustainable development, while the other, led by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, will highlight climate action and resilience under the Paris Agreement framework.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that these engagements are intended to strengthen the Maldives’ diplomatic relations with other member states and the wider multilateral community.
The Maldives has also secured one of the five Vice-Presidency positions allocated to the Asia-Pacific region for the 80th General Assembly, further enhancing its role within the United Nations.
