The ongoing joint operation by the Male’ City Council and the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) to ensure hygiene standards in food service establishments within Male’ may be extended due to the large number of premises requiring inspection.
The initiative, which began on Sunday, was initially scheduled to conclude on Thursday. However, the Male’ City Council has indicated that the operation may continue beyond the original deadline to cover all establishments in the city.
The operation aims to address concerns over inadequate hygiene standards in certain food service establishments. Illegal and unhygienic outlets are being issued notices and, where necessary, shut down to ensure public health and safety.
Inspectors will review all types of eateries, including cafes, restaurants, and takeaway outlets. The assessment covers both previously approved establishments and those operating without legal permission to provide food services.
The city has been divided into six designated sectors for the inspections, with joint teams from the MFDA and Male’ City Council deployed across each area.
Under the Food Safety Act, which came into effect on 23 August last year, all food service businesses are required to obtain a licence. The MFDA is authorised to take immediate action against unlicensed operations. Individuals found trading in food without proper registration or licensing may face fines ranging from MVR 10,000 to MVR 500,000, depending on the severity of the offence.
