Maldives Immigration has reported the detention of twenty-four foreign nationals within the past 24 hours as part of an operation targeting illegal trading activities.
The initiative, which began on Sunday, follows inspections carried out in nine areas of Male’ City.
The operation, announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday evening, is aimed at identifying and shutting down businesses operated unlawfully by foreigners in the Maldives. The President stated that the effort will prioritise areas with larger populations and will involve the deportation of those found in violation.
Immigration Controller General Ahmed Faseeh has indicated that many illegal businesses in the country are run by Maldivian citizens, with foreign nationals also engaged in these activities. He noted that enforcement will therefore extend to both groups, adding that the complexity of the operation lies in the involvement of influential individuals and established business figures.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Dawood outlined that the operation will proceed in three phases. The first stage will cover Male’, followed by densely populated islands, with smaller islands addressed in the final stage.
Authorities have described the operation as a significant step in curbing unlawful commercial ventures, with ongoing enforcement expected to continue in the coming weeks.
