President Dr Mohamed Muizzu continued his visit to Thaa Atoll yesterday, stopping at Kan’doodhoo, Hirilandhoo, Vandhoo and Veymandoo as part of his ongoing eight-day tour of four atolls across the Maldives.
Since last Friday, the President has visited islands in Vaavu, Meemu and Faafu Atolls, launching projects, engaging with residents and updating communities on government pledges, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, healthcare and education.
Farmers Assured of Support in Kan’doodhoo
At Kan’doodhoo, President Muizzu met with the Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) and local institution heads to hear residents’ concerns. Council members highlighted the need for harbour expansion, improved access to RTL services, and the completion of delayed projects such as the water and sewerage system and the Health Centre. Farmers also raised challenges affecting their livelihoods.
The President assured residents that the Government would prioritise these issues. He pledged that imports by the State Trading Organisation (STO) would not disadvantage Kan’doodhoo’s farmers, noting the island’s role as a hub for chilli cultivation. He confirmed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare would dispatch a team to help lower production costs and address cultivation challenges.
The President also said a decision would soon be taken on stalled utility projects and assured that upgrades to the school, Health Centre and sports facilities would follow. RTL ferry services for the atoll officially commenced last night. Agreements were signed for a harbour jetty, land reclamation and road development.
Fisheries and Cold Storage Pledged for Hirilandhoo
On Hirilandhoo, residents requested land reclamation and the development of a cold storage facility to support the island’s fisheries-dependent economy. They also requested that Health Centre services be upgraded to hospital standards.

President Muizzu announced that 200 loan opportunities for installing Refrigerated Sea Water (RSW) systems would open before this year’s Fishermen’s Day, following strong uptake of the first round by Hirilandhoo residents. He confirmed that a cold storage facility would be included in next year’s budget, with work set to begin in January.
He also pledged additional reclaimed land for industrial use, aligned with the island’s land-use strategy. New projects inaugurated yesterday included road development, a new Council Secretariat, and the groundbreaking of a mosque and fitness centre. Agreements were signed for a harbour upgrade, and the President assured residents that the school development project would be completed before the new academic year. Plans for a football ground were also announced.
Harbour and Shore Protection to Start in Vandhoo
Addressing Vandhoo residents, President Muizzu said the island’s harbour development and shore protection project, contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), would start immediately.
He confirmed that Kakolhas had been placed under Vandhoo Council’s jurisdiction to strengthen local governance and pledged further amendments to support economic growth. Work on the island’s mosque will be completed before next Ramadan, and the futsal ground later this year. Road development has been included in next year’s budget.
The President inaugurated Bank of Maldives ATM services, attended ground-breaking ceremonies for the Council Secretariat and fitness centre, and assured progress on healthcare and education initiatives.
Landmark Projects and New Services for Veymandoo
In Veymandoo, President Muizzu reaffirmed his Administration’s pledge to ease residents’ access to essential services. He oversaw the signing of agreements for a harbour upgrade, land reclamation, and road modernisation.

The President also highlighted the significance of the RTL ferry service launched yesterday, calling it a vital step in ensuring connectivity within Kolhumadulu Atoll.
He announced that the long-delayed multipurpose hall and school building would be completed by 2026, alongside a new Islamic University of Maldives Learning Centre. Plans include a FIFA-standard football pitch, a modern sports complex in the 2026 budget, and a new children’s park.
On healthcare, he confirmed immediate improvements ahead of a planned 50-bed hospital. Passport issuance services were also launched on the island.
