The Fahi Union has raised serious allegations that around 350 flats from the previous administration’s 4,000-unit Gedhoriuveriyaa housing scheme are being unlawfully offered for sale by individuals claiming to be employees of the Ministry of Housing.

During a press conference held on Thursday, lawyer Ali Hussain, who represents the Fahi Union—a group advocating for the fair and timely allocation of government housing—said that the flats are being illegally marketed. He alleged that two individuals from the President’s Office have been granted access to the Housing Ministry’s digital portal to facilitate the unauthorised transactions.
According to the Fahi Union, the alleged sellers are demanding MVR 250,000 per flat. Prospective buyers are reportedly asked to pay an initial sum of MVR 100,000 to have their names added to the flat list, with the remaining MVR 150,000 due at the time of signing an agreement.
Ali Hussain urged the government to launch a formal investigation into the matter through the police or intelligence services, emphasising the need to prevent individuals posing as ministry employees from exploiting the system. He said the flats in question were designated for specific individuals under an approved housing scheme and should not be traded.
The lawyer also claimed that the President’s Office has taken control of the remaining 1,000 flats after the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) had already signed agreements with 3,000 eligible applicants from the 4,000-unit project. He called on the government to take the matter seriously and take immediate corrective action.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had previously suspended the allocation of Gedhoriuveriyaa flats near the end of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration. The current government later conducted a review of the eligibility list and published a revised version in February this year, more than a year after assuming office.
Although concerns have continued over the revised list, Housing Minister Dr. Abdullah Muthalib has stated that the allocations will be made based on the former administration’s permanent list. However, it remains unclear which list is currently being used to allocate the flats.
