President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said the Maldives remains committed to shaping a sustainable and people-centred future for the country’s tourism sector, in his statement to celebrate World Tourism Day yesterday.

In his message, the President highlighted that the success of the industry, through which the Maldives has become a global leader in hospitality and tourism, was a testament to the vision and determination of its pioneers.

On his official X account, President Muizzu wrote that the nation remains committed to inclusive growth by extending opportunities to every atoll.

“Our aim is to build a resilient, people-centric tourism model that uplifts local economies and reflects the richness of our islands. Together, we are shaping a future where progress and sustainability go hand in hand,” he wrote.

The President noted that this year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” is closely aligned with national priorities, emphasising development while ensuring tourism remains a force for positive change. He pointed to significant progress towards building an inclusive and sustainable tourism model, with diversification at its core. Over recent years, the industry has expanded into less-engaged atolls and explored new areas, including halal tourism.

He said that these efforts were supported by major infrastructure projects, such as the new international terminal at Velana International Airport, which he explained was integral to the country’s wider development goals.

He also extended his gratitude to those working across the tourism sector, stressing that their dedication and service set the Maldivian experience apart. He added that the industry’s future rests on the hard work, commitment and contributions of these individuals.
