MDP Labels Fenaka Corruption Audit as Politically Motivated

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) accused the recently published report on alleged corruption by Fenaka Corporation during its administration of being a “political report” released with a particular agenda.
Auditor General Ibrahim Niyazi’s report, released on Thursday night, examined Fenaka’s performance in acquiring services and goods between 2021 and 2023. It highlighted several transactions said to be influenced by corruption.
Among the allegations, former Managing Director Ahmed Saeed was accused of awarding MVR 49 million to companies owned by his family and transferring over MVR 26 million to accounts belonging to Fenaka employees. The report also outlined other irregularities.

In a press release issued on 28 September, the MDP claimed the Auditor General had been coerced into compiling the report under threat of losing his position. The party condemned the report and questioned its validity, adding it was working to ensure the information presented was accurate.
The MDP stated that if any unlawful activities had occurred within government institutions during its administration, it would welcome proper probes and investigations carried out in accordance with the law.
The party further alleged that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had been influencing the judiciary and parliament, as well as pressuring the Auditor General to prepare reports “as he sees fit”, threatening to remove him otherwise. This, it argued, reflected the failure of state institutions.
According to the MDP, the audit was politically motivated, as none of those involved in the events were questioned during its preparation. The party also claimed the report was an attempt to tarnish the reputation of Maldivian business owners and to divert attention from what it alleged were corrupt practices by the current government involving state corporations.
The MDP linked the timing of the report’s release to the growing support it says it has received for its planned rally on 3 October. It also accused parliament of preparing to hold a meeting on 2 October to address “propaganda” related to the matter.
Despite MDP’s insistence that the corruption allegations are politically motivated, Fenaka’s former Managing Director, Ahmed Saeed, was found guilty in an unrelated case and sentenced to four years in prison by the Criminal Court yesterday.
Saeed was convicted of authorising payments to Blazon Inc. without verifying whether the project had been completed under the agreement between the company and Fenaka.
Alongside Saeed, Fenaka’s former Head of Procurement, Mariyam Dheena, is also facing charges.
Although the special audit report on Fenaka was released to the public, the hearings in this case have already been completed.
