Former President Mohamed Nasheed has announced plans to organise a national conference aimed at gathering evidence and analysing cases of corruption and embezzlement of state funds.

The upcoming conference will examine corruption and abuse of office across various administrations. It will bring together legal experts, civil society leaders, and journalists to explore a broad spectrum of corrupt practices in the Maldives.

The event is expected to feature testimony from whistleblowers and victims of corruption. Participants will also review official documents and engage in strategic discussions on legal reforms, transparency, and improved regulatory frameworks. Topics will include developing mechanisms for accountability and exploring access to international assistance to combat corruption more effectively.

Nasheed’s office described the conference as the beginning of a sustainable, long-term campaign against corruption through public engagement and legal advocacy. It stated that the initiative seeks to restore public confidence in state institutions and ensure accountability among officials who have lost public trust.

Former Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) and former Finance Minister Ali Hashim, along with former Minister of Economic Development Mahmood Razee, are expected to attend the conference. Further details regarding the venue, date, and registration process will be announced later.

The announcement comes amid heightened scrutiny of corruption cases in the Maldives. Last week, the Auditor General’s Office reported that MVR 1.4 billion had been spent without competitive bidding over a three-year period at the state-owned Fenaka Corporation. The report implicated the previous Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government, of which Nasheed was a key figure.

On Sunday, former FENAKA Managing Director Ahmed Saeed Mohamed was sentenced to four years in prison on corruption-related charges.
