President Dr Mohamed Muizzu condemned Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters, unarmed civilian vessels carrying vital humanitarian aid to Gaza today.
The flotilla, made up of 45 ships, is transporting around 500 politicians, lawyers, and activists advocating for Palestinian rights.
In a post on X, President Muizzu described the act as intimidation that is unacceptable and must not be tolerated.

“Targeting a humanitarian convoy carrying relief to a population deprived of freedom and basic necessities is a grave affront to humanity and international law,” he said.
The President added that Israel’s actions demonstrate a repeated disregard for human dignity and compassion, further isolating itself from the international community.
Calling on the global community to act, President Muizzu urged decisive measures against what he described as Israel’s “gross and repeated violations of international law.” He reiterated the Maldives’ solidarity with the Palestinian people in their struggle for justice, peace, and security.
Additionally, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) submitted an emergency motion to Parliament today, urging the government to ensure the safety of Maldivian citizens on the Global Sumud Flotilla carrying aid to Gaza.
As Parliament reconvened after recess this morning, Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir tabled the motion, condemning Israel’s interception of the flotilla. The motion received bipartisan support and was accepted for debate with a unanimous vote of 57.
In his motion, Mauroof called on the Maldivian administration to ascertain the safety of citizens participating in the mission. He also urged the government to “identify and do whatever it can to condemn this, ascertain the safety of the Maldivian citizens joining this movement, and for the state to join this movement.”
The Global Sumud Flotilla represents the largest effort to date to challenge Israel’s aid blockade in Gaza. Among those on board is Ibrahim Shaz (Bodey), Secretary General of the International Aid Campaign (IAC) Maldives.
