Police stated that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) obstructed police duty during the protest in Lootuvaifi last night, and action will be taken against those responsible.

The rally, which drew hundreds of participants to Artificial Beach, escalated into clashes between protesters and law enforcement, with officers deploying pepper spray and arresting several individuals.

Authorities reported that the MDP rally deviated from the previously approved route. Special Operations (SO) Police prevented protesters from leaving Artificial Beach to proceed along Majeedhee Magu, resulting in confrontations. Police warned participants repeatedly but said protesters threw items at officers and obstructed them from performing their duties. The exact number of arrests has not been confirmed, although observers reported at least three individuals being detained on the scene.

The MDP said the protest aimed to voice public dissatisfaction with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s government and to call attention to alleged constitutional violations, economic mismanagement, and restrictions on freedom of expression.

Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir outlined five specific demands during the rally, including the withdrawal of a constitutional amendment affecting MPs’ seats, the release of state payments to private companies within five weeks, amendments to the Decentralisation Act, repeal of the Media Act, and guaranteed access to Aasandha and essential medications.

MDP President Abdullah Shahid emphasised the party’s role in implementing peaceful political reforms and said the rally sought to prevent what he described as the “plundering” of state resources. Shahid stated that the party would continue to protect the reforms it had achieved and stressed that governmental power originates from the people.

Home Minister Ali Ihusaan said the MDP’s actions suggested the demonstration was not intended to be peaceful. He explained that while the party had requested approval to march along Majeedhee Magu, police designated an alternative route due to traffic and safety concerns. Ihusaan confirmed that the government remains committed to protecting freedom of expression while ensuring public safety.

The protest concluded shortly after midnight with a prayer led by Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdulla. The MDP criticised the police for using pepper spray and called for the release of those arrested. Volunteers from the Maldives Red Crescent were present to provide first aid during the rally.
