President Dr Mohamed Muizzu made pledges on infrastructure, education, and healthcare during his visits to Dhidhdhoo, Maamigili, and Fenfushi in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll yesterday, as part of his ongoing tour of the atoll.
The President’s visit to Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, which began yesterday, includes ten inhabited islands. His most recent tour was an eight-day visit to Vaavu, Meemu, Faafu, and Thaa Atolls last month.
Harbour Channel Project Pledged for Dhidhdhoo
President Muizzu has pledged that the harbour channel project for Alifu Dhaalu Dhidhdhoo will begin in November. He announced while meeting residents and community leaders at the island’s harbour area during his ongoing tour of the atoll.
At the meeting, council members and residents raised concerns over the impact of the southwest monsoon on the harbour channel, as well as delays in the water and sanitation projects. The President assured that the Government would prioritise these issues, stating that the harbour channel project would begin in November as part of efforts to improve island infrastructure.
President Muizzu also engaged with the Island Council and institutional heads to discuss broader development priorities for Dhidhdhoo. He was accompanied by Cabinet ministers and senior officials from State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), who provided updates on ongoing and upcoming projects.
Government to Take Over Stalled Infrastructure Projects, Says President Muizzu
While speaking to residents of Fenfushi, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that delays in water and sewerage projects across several islands were caused by non-performance of contracted companies. He noted that the government has decided to terminate existing contracts and complete the projects through alternative means, including those in Fenfushi. The President also pledged to resume the island’s halted school construction project, with the aim of completing it before the next academic year.
During his visit, agreements were signed for two major projects: the development of a new boatyard and the construction of a mosque accommodating 300 people. President Muizzu also inaugurated several new development initiatives, including a Health Centre building, a Waste and Resource Management Centre, a new police post, a running track, and a volleyball court.
The President also launched the Bank of Maldives (BML) ATM service in Fenfushi and announced that the mosque project will include a funeral house. He stated that the new Health Centre will be built with provisions to ensure uninterrupted services during the transition period.
Council members and local leaders raised the need to expedite the water and sewage project, expand classroom capacity, and incorporate a funeral house in the mosque plan. The President assured that their concerns would be given due consideration.
Developments in Healthcare and Education Pledged in Maamigili
In Maamigili, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that by 2026, healthcare providers and hospitals will be able to communicate directly with ministries and relevant State institutions as autonomous entities. He said the reform aims to reduce bureaucracy and improve efficiency across the healthcare system, with all required technical and human resources to be in place by the end of this year.
The President also confirmed that each atoll will be allocated a designated picnic island for community and tourism use, noting that a Cabinet paper is being prepared to formalise the proposal.
During the visit, President Muizzu attended the signing ceremony for the establishment of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) Maamigili Campus, a key pledge of his Administration. He described the project as essential for a development hub like Maamigili and noted that the school upgradation project will be completed by the 2026 academic year.
He further announced that work on a 30-bed hospital, a Bank of Maldives branch, and a road development project will begin soon. ID card and passport services will start by the end of October, while WAMCO will assume responsibility for waste management this year.
The President also pledged to establish a public works unit, create employment opportunities, and initiate a housing project and sports complex under the 2026 national budget.
During meetings with the Island Council, WDC, and institutional heads, residents raised concerns over road development delays, waste management, and the need for additional school and health staff. President Muizzu assured that their concerns would be addressed in line with national development priorities.
