Consultations Begin to Strengthen Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Abuse Law
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Family Development has begun consultations to amend and strengthen the Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Abuse Act.
The law, which protects individuals from sexual harassment and abuse in workplaces, educational institutions, health facilities, and social service settings, is undergoing a comprehensive review to enhance its effectiveness.
The consultation process aims to reinforce the legal framework in collaboration with relevant government agencies. The Ministry has engaged Alifu Law Chambers, a local law firm, to support the legislative strengthening effort.
Minister of State for Social Affairs and Family Development, Aishath Zuhurubaan, said the initiative seeks to ensure the safety and security of individuals employed in institutions covered by the Act, including educational, social, and service organisations.
The current Act prohibits sexual harassment or abuse by employers or colleagues within the workplace. It also requires complaints to be investigated promptly, with respondents receiving written notice to immediately cease the alleged behaviour.
Furthermore, the legislation mandates the restoration of any rights lost by the complainant as a result of harassment and provides for compensation to cover damages incurred due to the abuse.
