Gov’t Announces MACL to Bring Three Dredgers for Land Reclamation Projects
Photp: The President’s Office
The government has announced that Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) will bring in three dredgers this year to support land reclamation projects assigned to the company.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who is currently visiting Shaviyani Atoll, made the announcement during a meeting with residents of Komandoo on Wednesday night. The President acknowledged that criticism has been raised by some individuals opposed to the government’s ongoing reclamation projects, but stressed that every project is part of a coordinated plan to be carried out simultaneously across different islands.
According to the President, preparations for the reclamation works are already underway. An 11,000-tonne dredger is expected to arrive by the end of October, followed by a 40,000-tonne dredger in the third week of November, which will begin work on the Rasmale’ project. A third dredger is scheduled to arrive in December and will be deployed for the Haa Alif Dhidhdhoo project.
The President further noted that after the reclamation work in Shaviyani Atoll is completed, the same dredger will be moved to undertake projects in Haa Alif Atoll and later attend to unfinished works in the Malé region.
In addition to the equipment being brought in by MACL, the company has signed an agreement with another firm to accelerate reclamation projects in the Malé area. The partner company is also expected to deploy dredgers for the upcoming works.
