The cause of the mass death of ducks and fish at the duck park in Hulhudhoo, Addu City, remains unknown more than a week after the incident was first reported.
Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with samples still being collected and analysed. No arrests have been made, and authorities have not confirmed whether poisoning is suspected.
The incident came to public attention after a local resident shared images of dead ducks and fish on social media, alleging that the park’s water had been poisoned. Hulhudhoo councilor Hussain Faizu-Rahman reported that the deaths began on Thursday, initially affecting ducks before spreading to fish. He noted suspicions of deliberate contamination but said the council lacks the capacity to test for toxins.
Seven of the eight ducks housed in the park have died, with the remaining duck reportedly ill. The park, which opened two years ago, features birdhouses and a pond that attracts ducks, pigeons, and colourful fish. It currently has no CCTV coverage, though the council is considering installing cameras.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare confirmed it is investigating the matter alongside relevant authorities. The Ministry of Environment has not yet responded to requests for comment.
