The government has reiterated its directive for cafés in Hulhumalé to remove tables and chairs placed on sidewalks.
The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) stated that, despite previous instructions issued last August, many cafés continue to position furniture on sidewalks and along hedges. HDC emphasised that using sidewalks for commercial purposes in a way that obstructs pedestrians is prohibited.
The corporation has instructed all cafés to remove the tables and chairs from sidewalks by next Thursday. In addition, HDC highlighted that large, fast-growing trees planted within the hedges in Hulhumalé are affecting rainwater drainage, contributing to flooding and damage to road surfaces. As a result, the removal of these trees has also been ordered.
HDC warned that if the tables, chairs, and hedges are not cleared by the deadline, the corporation will remove them itself and will not be responsible for any damage that occurs during the process.
