The Maldives and Egypt have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations, further strengthening the longstanding diplomatic relations between the two nations.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the MoU was signed as part of Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel’s ongoing official visit to Egypt. The agreement formalises a consultation mechanism that has been in place since 2019, enabling both countries to enhance coordination on political and diplomatic matters.

Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel and his Egyptian counterpart Dr Badr Abdelatty held official talks in Cairo on Saturday at the Tahrir Palace, reaffirming the close friendship between the Maldives and Egypt. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade, health, education, and tourism, as well as strengthening collaboration at the multilateral level.

Dr Khaleel expressed appreciation for Egypt’s continued assistance in education and human resource development, particularly through scholarships offered by Al-Azhar University, which have benefitted generations of Maldivian students. The talks also explored opportunities to broaden cooperation in the health sector through the exchange of expertise and collaboration in medical services.

The Ministers discussed potential areas for economic and trade cooperation, with emphasis on agriculture and food security. Both sides recognised the importance of enhancing tourism links and promoting greater people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

During the meeting, Dr Khaleel commended Egypt’s leadership in supporting the Palestinian cause and reaffirmed the Maldives’ solidarity with the people of Palestine in their pursuit of statehood based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital. He also praised Egypt’s role in hosting the recent Gaza Peace Summit, which resulted in a ceasefire agreement aimed at alleviating civilian suffering and advancing peace in the region.

Both Ministers reiterated their commitment to continued collaboration in promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development. They expressed confidence that the relations between the Maldives and Egypt will continue to grow, bringing lasting benefits to both nations.

Minister Khaleel was accompanied by Secretary Dr Hala Hameed and Additional Secretary Khadeeja Najeeha from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the visit.
