The Criminal Court has ordered the release of all individuals arrested during the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest on 3 October, subject to conditions.

Eight people were detained following the demonstration, with six initially remanded for 15 days. Those remanded included former North Kulhudhuffushi MP Yasir Abdul Latheef, former Dhaandhoo MP Yauqoob Abdulla, and Maafushi Island Council President Hassan Solah.

Police later sought a further 15 days’ custody, but the court this morning opted to free the detainees on the condition that they cooperate with the investigation and promptly report any changes to their address or contact details.

Lawyers for the detainees had previously petitioned the court to review the remand order, a request that was earlier rejected.

The MDP, meanwhile, is preparing for a mass protest on 17 November.
