The Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has completed the first peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion surgery in the Maldives, marking a significant step forward in the country’s healthcare services.
It has been 18 months since IGMH started providing peritoneal dialysis services. This service is a safe treatment that can be performed by the patient in their own island, in their own home, without any pain, and without the use of a machine. The procedure, which officially commenced the hospital’s peritoneal dialysis service, was carried out by a special team of Maldivian doctors trained in surgery, urology, anaesthesia and nephrology.
Peritoneal dialysis allows patients to receive dialysis treatment safely and painlessly at home, eliminating the need for frequent hospital visits. The procedure involves inserting a soft tube, known as a peritoneal dialysis catheter, into the abdominal cavity through a small incision. This enables dialysis fluid to flow in and out, helping to filter waste products from the blood. The surgery can be performed using open or minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques.
According to Male’ City Group of Hospital (MCGH) CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, IGMH has been providing peritoneal dialysis services for the past 18 months, and the introduction of the catheter insertion surgery officially launches the full service. He also noted that the hospital is currently conducting additional training sessions to further enhance the service.
The successful completion of the surgery represents a notable milestone in the Maldives’ medical sector, as the number of patients requiring dialysis continues to rise. The government has been working to introduce modern technologies to improve the quality and accessibility of dialysis care across the country.
