The government has announced plans to invest MVR 68 million in the development of Waqf buildings in four cities and Villingili in Gaafu Alif Atoll.
The projects are part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s policy to expand the national Waqf system.
According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the selected locations for the new endowment buildings are Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, Thinadhoo City, Kulhudhuffushi City, and Villingili. The total investment includes MVR 23 million for Addu, MVR 15 million for Fuvahmulah, and MVR 10 million each for Thinadhoo, Kulhudhuffushi, and Villingili.
All projects are scheduled to commence in January. Profits generated from these endowment buildings will be used to support Islamic activities in the respective cities, including Qur’an education and religious outreach. The ministry stated that two additional Waqf projects will also be launched in the Male’ area, with benefits expected to extend nationwide.
The current Waqf projects are being implemented in partnership with city and atoll councils, and funds generated from the initiatives will remain under council control. The ministry had previously launched the City Endowment and Atoll Endowment initiative on 4 January last year to promote sustainable religious and social development.
A Waqf is an Islamic charitable endowment that involves donating buildings, land, or other assets for religious or social welfare purposes, such as establishing mosques, schools, hospitals, or housing for those in need.
